THROGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 1, 2009) – The Maritime women's soccer team opened the 2009 campaign with an 11-1 victory over Berkeley College Tuesday night on Reinhart Field. With the win, the program moved over the .500-mark (1-0) for the first time in the Laura Mooney era and recorded its largest margin of victory in its short five-year history.
Leading the offense was junior Kaitlin Murray (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) who recorded a hat-trick, with all three tallies coming in the first half. Sophomore AudryAnna Ward (West Sullivan, N.Y./Lake Huntington) and freshman Meghan Burke (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan Wagner) chipped in with two goals apiece, while senior Meagan Golden (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant), juniors Noelle Gajeski (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) and Christina George (Southold, N.Y./Southold) and sophomore Samantha Easterman (Amityville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) each scored once. The Privateers did a great job of maintaining the possession throughout the game en route to the win.
In net for Maritime, freshman keeper Courtney Marietta (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin) held a shutout well into the second half until the Bulldogs recorded their only goal of the contest in the 62nd minute. Marietta ended the game with five saves.
The Privateers return to action this Saturday, Sept. 5, when they host Keystone at 1 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
