Box Score THROGS NECK, NY - The Maritime men's basketball team won their third straight, defeating Yeshiva at home 67-46. The win puts Maritime into a tie for third place in the conference with a 9-5 record, while Yeshiva drops to 4-10 in the conference.
The Maccabees opened the game with a 7-0 run to take early command of the game. However, the Privateers came back with their own run, an 11-0 offensive show capped by a breakaway dunk from Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) (Brooklyn, NY/Middle College). With the 11-7 lead, the Privateers never looked back, and took the game into their control. The lead was pushed to 9 after a three pointer from Rahshawn Pringle (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglas) (Bronx, NY/Frederick Douglas) with 1:39 to play in the opening half. Yeshiva had the final basket of the half, to go into the locker room down 25-32.
The second half opened with the Privateers extending their lead to 13, while shutting down the Yeshiva offense by forcing 5 turnovers and 5 missed shots. The Maccabees were held scoreless until the 12:02 mark when Maritin Leibovich hit a three to bring the lead back to 10. With the10 point advantage, the Privateers continued to make their shots, going on a 7-0 run to open the game up to a 17 point differential. The Maccabees would come as close as 12 points with 4:43 to play, but the Privateers finished the final 4:43 with an 11-2 run to grab their 12th overall victory of the season.
Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) had a career high 24 points and pulled down 8 boards. He also recorded 2 assists and 3 steals, while throwing down two breakaway dunks in the game. Timothy Dougherty (Fresh Meadows, NY/St. Francis Prep) was the only other Privateer in double figures with 11 points and 9 rebounds.
Yeshiva had two players in double figures, Simon Brookim with 20 and Martin Leibovich with 10.
The Privateers will be on the road for their final non-conference game of the season at St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn on Tuesday evening. The game will be played at 6:30PM.
