Box Score THROGS NECK, NY – The Maritime men's basketball team played Centenary College in a non-conference game at the IZOD Center, home of the New Jersey Nets, on Tuesday. The Privateers picked up their 10th win of the season with a 74-59 victory over Centenary College. The Privateers are 10-8 on the season, while Centenary dropped to 8-10.
Maritime opened the scoring with a dunk by Quamel Lyerly (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence) (Lawrence, NY/Lawrrence) after a steal made near center court. Despite the opening dunk, the Privateers saw themselves down 15-7 at the 11 minute mark. However, the Privateers settled into their game and came back strong, knotting the game at 17 each with six minutes to play in the half. With 3:52 to play, Tim Dougherty (Fresh Meadows, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) (Fresh Meadows, NY/St. Francis Prep) connected on two free throws to give the Privateers a one point lead, a lead that would never be given back to the Cyclones. Maritime closed the half on an 8-0 run to go into the locker room with a 27-20 advantage.
The Cyclones stayed within striking distance in the second half, and eventually cut the lead to 2 points with 8:56 to play in the game. Having seen their halftime lead disappear, the Privateers went on a 10-0 run to open the lead to 12 points with 5:49 to play. The Cyclones seemed to run out of gas towards the end of the game, and the Privateers closed the game out with a 15 point win.
Leading the way for Maritime was Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, NY/Middle College) with 19 points on 7-12 shooting. Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) (Baltimore, MD) came off the bench to add 14 and Tim Dougherty (Fresh Meadows, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) finished with a double-double 12 points and 10 rebounds. For the Cyclones, Andrew Baker led the team with 15.
Up next for Maritime is a conference home game against Purchase College on Thursday beginning at 8:00PM. The Privateers defeated Purchase three weeks prior in overtime, 81-76.
