Box Score THROGS NECK, NY - The men's basketball team revenged two regular season losses to the Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent, by beating them 89-60 in front of a home crowd of more than 800 fans. The third seeded Privateers (15-11) move on to play the second seeded St. Joseph's Eagles on Thursday in Patchogue, NY. The Dolphins season ends at 12-14 overall.
The Dolphins held only one lead the entire game, after scoring the game's first basket to go up 2-0. After that, the Privateers took control and never looked back. The Privateers scored the next 10 points to go up 8, and took their first double digit lead at the 12:20 mark after Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) (Baltimore, MD) hit a jumpshot. Kevin Josey (Staten Island, N.Y./Monroe Webster) (Staten Island, NY/Monroe Webster) was fouled on a three point attempt and hit all 3 fouls shots to put Maritime up 15 late in the first half. Joe Bracaglia (Jamaica, NY/Martin Van Buren) was also fouled on a three point attempt, this one with only a second showing on the clock. He hit all three to give Maritime a 16 point edge, 44-28, heading into the locker room.
The Dolphins came out and scored the first 7 points of the second half, cutting the deficit down to 9. Maritime was able to extend the lead back to 13 before Mount Saint Vincent went on another run to cut it all the way down to 6 at the 13:59 mark. After calling a timeout to re-group, the Privateers pushed their lead to 15 again, after Josey hit a jumper with 7:45 to play. Mount Saint Vincent's Nick DiMaggio hit a three on the ensuing possession to cut it to 12, but that would be as close as the Dolphins would get the rest of the way. Josey answered with his own three, and the Privateers went to work on the defensive end. The Dolphins would score only one two points in the final 5:07 of the game, and Maritime clinched a spot in the conference semifinals with a 29 point win.
Leading the Maritime charge was Josey and Tim Dougherty (Fresh Meadows, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) (Fresh Meadows, NY/St. Francis Prep) with 21 points each. Dougherty finished with 12 rebounds to lead the team in the category. Quamel Lyerly (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence) (Lawrence, NY/Lawrence) scored 10 points and pulled down 8 boards. Cooper finished the game with 5 assists to go along with his 6 points.
Nick DiMaggio led the way with 27 points on 10-21 shooting. Matias Roibal added 13 and Patrick Panetta had 11. Nobody for the Dolphins had double digit rebounds, and as a team, the Privateers held a 46-32 advantage on the glass.
Up next for Maritime is the Skyline Conference Quarterfinals against St. Joseph's College on Thursday at 7:00PM. The eagles beat Maritime twice this season, with the most recent a 10 point victory last Saturday.
