Box Score THROGS NECK, NY - The men's basketball team fell to St. Joseph's College in the final regular season game of the 2008-09 season 76-66. The Privateers fell to 14-11 (11-7) on the season, but remained the 3 seed in the upcoming tournament. St. Joseph's improved to 22-3 (16-2) and will be the tournament's second seed.
The Privateers were outscored by 11 in the first half after shooting only 37% from the field. The Golden Eagles were 11-13 from the free throw line, compared to Maritime's 5-10 which made up the point discrepancy. Kevin Josey (Staten Island, N.Y./Monroe Webster) (Staten Island, NY/Monroe Webster) came off the bench to score 14 points in the first half, while also pulling down 4 boards and making 2 steals.
The Privateers cut the 11 point lead down to 8 halfway through the second, and had numerous attempts to cut it even further. Between the 10:54 mark and the 7:25 mark, the Privateers had five chances to score, but their shots rolled off the rim and the lead remained at 8 for the Golden Eagles. St. Joseph's pushed it to as much as 14 with three minutes to play, but the Privateers continued to play until the final horn, eventually outscoring SJC by 1 in the second half and finishing the game with a 76-66 loss.
Josey led the Privateers with a career high 25 points and 10 rebounds on 10-15 shooting. He connected on all three 3-pt. attempts and had 4 steals in 28 minutes played. Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) (Baltimore, MD) and Jermelle Fraser (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman) (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman) each had 10 points.
The Privateers will be playing host to Mount Saint Vincent in the Skyline Conference Quarterfinals on Tuesday at 7:00PM. The Dolphins beat the Privateers twice during the regular season, making for an exciting match-up on Tuesday.
