Box Score THROGS NECK, NY - The Privateers were ahead by as many as 20 points in the first half, but could not hold off the attack of the Mariners from Kings Point in the second half. Maritime held a 10 point lead at the break, and were outscored 53-39 in the second half to fall 74-70. The loss drops Maritime to 5-5 overall while Kings Point improved to 7-6.
The Mariners opened the game by scoring the first 4 points, but the Privateers answered right back with 4 of their own. After the game's second tie at 17:15, the Privateers went on an 18-3 run to open the game up and take a 15 point lead on Kevin Josey (Staten Island, N.Y./Monroe Webster)'s (Staten Island, NY/Monroe Webster) three point hit. The Privateers were not done yet, as they scored 6 of the next 7 points to widen the lead to 20, 30-10. With 7:04 to play in the first half, Kings Point cracked down defensively and only gave up one more point before the half, while scoring 11 of their own. The 11-1 run to close the half gave the momentum to the visiting Mariners heading into the locker room.
Kings Point built on that momentum and came out firing, opening with an 18-7 run to tie the game with 14 minutes to play. The Mariners were able to push the lead to 7 over the next five minutes, but the Privateers didn't go away. Maritime cut the lead to 2 after Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) (Baltimore, MD) hit the back end of 2 free throws and the teams went on to trade baskets. The games 5th tie came at 4:09 after Rahshawn Pringle (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglas) (Bronx, NY/Frederick Douglas) hit a 15 foot jumper. Pringle hit two free throws 2 minutes later to knot the game at 61, but the Mariners answered with a three point shot from Pat Grace that gave Kings Point the lead for good.
Despite playing behind the final 2:45, the Privateers never gave up, bringing the 7 point disadvantage down to as little as 3. Kings Point made 6 of their last 8 foul shots to seal the 74-70 win.
Maritime was led by Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) with 17 points, followed by Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) (Brooklyn, NY/Middle College) with a double-double 13 points and 11 rebounds. Rahshawn Pringle (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglas) added 13 and Quamel Lyerly (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence) (Lawrence, NY/Lawrence) finished with 10.
For the Mariners, Matt Hueber recorded 19 points to lead all scorers. Pat Grace and Tom Izzo each added 12 to round out the double digit scorers.
The Privateers will play host to Old Westbury on Wednesday evening beginning at 8:00PM.
