Men's Soccer Opens Season with Victory Over CCNY

THROGS NECK, NY - The SUNY Maritime men's soccer team was victorious in their season opener against the City College of New York, winning 2-0.  The game was played at Maritime, although it was an away game for the Privateers.  CCNY did not have a field for the contest.

Mayer Nelson (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) picked up from where he left off last season, scoring the first goal of 2008 for the Privateers only 19 minutes in.  Freshman Jason Tursi (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) assisted on the goal.  Maritime took 6 shots in the first half, and their defense held tight allowing only 3 shots in the half.  Emilio Andino (Roselle, NJ/Abraham Clark) (Roselle, NJ/Abraham Clark) put in his first goal of the season 2 minutes before the half, sending Maritime into the locker room with a 2-0 lead.

City College attempted 7 shots in the second half, but couldnt connect on any, thanks to the efforts of Harris Papson (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) (Flushing, NY/Francis Lewis)Harris made 6 saves for the game, 3 of them in the second half.  The defense held tight, and the offense controlled the ball for the final 45 minutes to give Maritime the 2-0 victory.

The Privateers have some time off before playing Hunter College on September 10th at the ICAHN Stadium.  The game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
