Box Score THROGS NECK, NY - A goal scored in the 85th minute by freshman John Blunden (Arlington, VA/Washington) put the Privateers up 1-0 and they would hold on to win their third game of the season. The Privateers are now 3-2 on the season.
The first half was a defensive battle, with each team taking 5 shots and both goalkeepers making impressive saves. The teams were called offsides a combined 12 times, and neither team could find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes of play.
The second half looked just like the first, with both teams' defense stepping up. Each team took 9 shots each in the second, but neither could net a goal until 85:37. On a breakaway, Cougar goalkeeper John Ajirotutu made the decision to come out of the net to defend the ball but slipped, allowing Mayer Nelson (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) to send a centering pass directly to a streaking John Blunden who found the back of the open net. With the 1-0 lead and under 5 minutes to play, the game seemed to be well in hand.
However, a foul on Maritime's defense with 50 seconds to play gave Medgar Evers one last chance to score the tieing goal. The free kick from 25 yards out was the Cougar's last hope to tie. Michael Plummer sent his free kick straight at the net, but Harris Papson (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) (Flushing, NY/Francis Lewis) made the diving save to secure his third shutout of the season, and 9th save of the game.
The Privateers will enjoy a week off before playing again at home on the 22nd against Baruch College. The game is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
