Men's Lacrosse Closes Out Best Season in Maritime History

THROGS NECK, NY - The Maritime men's lacrosse team dropped the final game of the 2008 season to Drew University 13-8, in the ECAC Semi-Final match played in the strong wind and heavy rain in Madison NJ this past Friday.  Despite the loss, Maritime still ended the season with the best record the team has ever had, 11-5 overall.

The Privateers got off to a slow start, allowing Drew to score the first 5 goals of the game before scoring one of their own.  Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland) (Yorktown, NY/Lakeland) was the first to put Maritime on the board, scoring it with 52 second remaining in the half.  Drew scored one more before the half, to bring a comfortable 6-1 lead into the locker room.

The Privateers came out looking like a much different team in the second half, outscoring Drew 5-2 in the third and cutting the lead to 8-6 going into the final quarter.  Doherty notched two more in the quarter, to go along with Chris Toby (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside)'s (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) two goals and Steve Hackeling (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor)'s (Huntington, NY/Cold Spring Harbor) single goal. 

Maritime kept the deficit at 2 goals, after trading goals with Drew in the opening 7 minutes of the final quarter.  Steve Hackeling (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) scored both Maritime's fourth quarter goals.  The Privateers couldn't mount a comeback, as Drew scored three more times before the final whistle, sending Maritime home with a 13-8 loss.  Drew went on to beat top seeded Swarthmore in the ECAC Championship.

Colin Gallagher (Minneapolis, Minn./Westhill) (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) made 12 saves for the game, playing all 60 minutes.  TJ Beaudette (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) (Floral Park, NY/Floral Park) was the only Privateer to record an assist.

Five seniors played their final gave as a Privateer on Friday. They were captain Tom Freeman (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle), captain Alex Rosero (Bellport, NY/Bellport) (Bellport, NY/Bellport), captain Dereck Vizzo (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville), captain DJ Toby (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside), and Drew Anderson (Victor, N.Y./Victor) (Victor, NY/Victor)
