Men's Lacrosse Wins Conference Opener on the Road Against Kean University

THROGGS NECK, NY - The SUNY Maritime men's lacrosse team won their first conference game of the season, as well as their first road game of the season, this past Saturday.  The Privateers came back from a 7-3 deficit to defeat Kean University 11-9 to improve to 7-2 (1-0) on the season.

The Privateers jumped to an early 2-0 lead on a pair of goals scored by Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland) (Yorktwon, NY/Lakeland) in the opening 3 minutes.  Kean cut the lead in half with a goal, but Steve Hackeling (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) (Huntington, NY/Cold Spring Harbor) answered back to keep the two goal lead for Maritime.  Kean scored the final two goals in the first quarter to tie the score at 3 heading into the second.

Kean opened the second scoring the first 4 goals, giving themselves a 7-3 cushion.  It wasn't until the 2:50 mark in the second that Maritime scored again, this time by Alex Rosero (Bellport, NY/Bellport) (Bellport, NY/Bellport).  Donald Toby (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) followed a minute later to bring the score to 7-5 at the half.

Maritime opened the third the same way Kean opened the second; with 4 straight goals to retake the lead.  Toby had the first in the quarter, followed by Keith Fricke (White Plains, NY/White Plains) (White Plains, NY/White Plains), Doherty, then Rosero.  Toby closed the quarter out with his third goal of the game, giving Maritime an 8-10 lead heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

The fourth quarter saw only two goals, one by each team.  Rosero had his third goal of the game with 5:18 to play.  Kean scored with 1:02 left to bring the score to 11-9.  Colin Gallagher (Minneapolis, Minn./Westhill) (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) recorded the win, making 10 saves in the game.

The Privateers are home for their next conference match on Wednesday evening against Mount Saint Vincent at 7:00PM.
