Men's Lacrosse Stays Perfect with 15-7 Home Victory

THROGGS NECK, NY - The SUNY Maritime men's lacrosse team improved to a perfect 3-0 with a 15-7 home victory over Centenary College.  The Cyclones fell to 0-3 on the season.

The Privateer defense won the first quarter, allowing only 5 shots and not giving up a single goal.  Maritime's offense scored twice in the first 15 minutes; the first by Lawrence Montreuil (New Hyde park, NY/New Hyde Park) with 6:08 showing, and the second by Keith Fricke (White Plains, NY/White Plains) (White Plains, NY/White Plains) with 6 seconds remaining. Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland) (Yorktown, NY/Lakeland) assisted on the first goal; his first of 3 assists for the game.

The Privateer offense came to life in the second quarter, scoring 6 times, including twice in the final 12 seconds before the half.  Doherty scored three times in the quarter, while senior captain Donald Toby (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) scored 2 of his 4 goals in the second.  The 6 goal 2nd quarter sent Maritime into the locker room up 8-3.

The Privateers scored the next 7 goals of the game over the third and beginning of the fourth quarter, to take a commanding 15-3 lead.  Montreuil assisted three times in the 3rd, as 5 different Privateers scored the 5 goals.  Defensively, Maritime help the Cyclones to no goals on only 2 shots in the third.  The 4th quarter saw Centenary outscore the Privateers 4-2, as Centenary scored the games' final 4 goals.  Jason Reig had 3 of his 4 goals for the Cyclones in the final quarter.

Statistically, the Privateers were 18-24 on face-offs, 15-15 on clear attempts, 2-5 on extra man opportunities (including a man down score), and had 20 more ground balls than their opponent (59-39).  Colin Gallagher (Minneapolis, Minn./Westhill) (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) recorded the win and made 8 saves in a little more than 53 minutes of action.  Centenary goalie Brian Triolo was impressive saving 16 shots.

The Privateers will play their first away game on Saturday against Lycoming College at 3:30.
