Privateer Baseball Struggles in Season Opener

THROGGS NECK, NY - The Maritime baseball team opened the 2008 season yesterday at CCNY, after being rained out the previous Saturday.  The Privateers played a single game, rather than the original double header, and lost 9-2 in 9 innings.

James Hoffman (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) (East Islip, NY/East Islip) started on the mound for the Privateers, going 5.1 innings giving up 8 hits and striking out 7.  Andrew Mayer (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) (Sag Harbor, NY/Pierson) came in and pitched 1.2 innings in relief, allowing only 2 hits and striking out 2.  Christopher Watson (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) (Bayville, NY/Locust Valley) finished the game, striking out 1 and walking 1.

Offensively, the Privateers only managed 4 hits, one of them a home run by senior Matthew Thomas (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) to lead off the ninth inning.  Others to register a hit were Matthew Cresswell (Commack, NY/Commack) (Commack, NY/Commack), Pablo Sanchez (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison), and James Hoffman (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip).

The Privateers will be traveling to Newport News, VA this weekend for games against Newport News Apprentice and Indian University (PA).  Following the weekend games, Maritime will play the first true home game in 2 years on the 21st at noon.
