Box Score THROGGS NECK, NY - The Maritime men's basketball team picked up a much needed win on Saturday against the Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent 68-65. The win kept Maritime in the 5th spot in the conference standings, and moved their overall record to 9-10 (6-6).
The Privateers took their first lead of the game at the 15:34 mark of the first half, and only gave it back to the Dolphins one time over the course of the game. The lead was pushed to as many as 16 with just over three minutes to play in the half, which led to a 14 point advantage at the half for the Privateers.
The second half started out with the Privateers extending their lead to 20 within the first 5 minutes, but then the offense struggled and allowed Mount Saint Vincent to get back into the game. Over the next 7 minutes, the Dolphins went on a 22-2 run to tie the game at 48 and a minute later, take a 1 point lead. The lead was short lived, as the Privateers went on their own run, scoring 15 points over the next 4 minutes to take a 7 point lead at the 2:00 mark. The Dolphins fought back to within a point on two different occasions, but couldn't get the lead back. A last second, half court 3-pt. shot went wide, and Maritime walked out with the win.
Junior Tim Dougherty (Fresh Meadows, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) (Fresh Meadows, NY/St. Francis Prep) led the Privateers with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) (Brooklyn, NY/Middle College) recorded 12 points on 4-6 shooting. Joseph Bracaglia (Jamaica, N.Y./Martin Van Buren) (Jamaica, NY/Martin Van Buren) had 10 points.
The Privateers will take a week off before heading to Farmingdale on Saturday at 1:00 PM. The Farmingdale kicks off a 4 game stretch over the week, including Mount Saint Mary's at the IZOD center on Tuesday, on the road at Purchase on Thursday, and home against Yeshiva on Saturday.
