Maritime Basketball Extends Season with 16 Point Rout in Conference Quarterfinals

THROGGS NECK, NY - In front of a crowd of more than 700 people, the SUNY Maritime men's basketball team defeated Mount Saint Mary's in the Skyline conference quarterfinal game by a final of 82-66.  The win sends Maritime into the semifinals against Farmingdale on Thursday evening at 8PM. 

Despite a slow opening to the game for the Privateers, the team never gave in, and took the lead for good with more than 9 minutes to play in the first half.  Defensively, the Privateers caused 10 turnovers and limited the Blue Knights to a dismal 34% shooting for the night (23% in the second half).  The Privateers also out rebounded the Blue Knights 50-28.  For the game, MSM shot 3-19 from behind the arc, due to Maritime's swarming defense on the ball.

Offensively, the Privateers were unstoppable, shooting an amazing 58% from the field on 32-55 shooting.  The Privateers spread the wealth around, dishing out 19 assists while 8 athletes scored in the game. 

Freshman Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) (Brooklyn, NY/Middle College HS) led the Privateers with 23 points on a nearly perfect 11-12 shooting from the field.  On top of that, he blocked 6 shots and pulled down 5 rebounds.  Jamal Webb (Tuckahoe, N.Y./Tuckahoe) (Tuckahoe, NY/Tuckahoe) followed with a double-double 21 points and 16 rebounds.  Webb also dished out 4 assists.  Tim Dougherty (Fresh Meadows, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) (Fresh Meadows, NY/St. Francis Prep) also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

For the visitors, Alex Kuchar scored 34 points on 12-27 shooting.  His teammate Chris Harrison had 14 points.

This was the first playoff appearance and victory for Maritime since 1999, when the Privateers beat Yeshiva in the quarterfinals.  This win sends Maritime into the semifinals against the conference's top seeded Farmingdale Rams on Thursday evening.  The game will be played at Farmingdale beginning at 8PM.
