Men's Lacrosse Opens Season with Convincing Victory

THROGGS NECK, NY - The SUNY Maritime men's lacrosse team opened their season this afternoon at home against the Crusaders of Alvernia College, with a strong and convincing 23-5 victory in front of nearly 300 fans.  This was the season opener for both teams.

The Privateers opened the scoring only 30 seconds into the game.  Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland) (Yorktwon, NY/Lakeland) scored the first of his two goals on the afternoon to give the Privateers the 1-0 lead early on.  Senior captain Alex Rosero (Bellport, NY/Bellport) (Bellport, NY/Bellport) scored next for Maritime less than a minute later.  Steve Hackeling (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) (Huntington, NY/Cold Spring Harbor) and Lawrence Montreuil (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park) each scored twice in the first quarter, to give the Privateers a 9-1 advantage after the first 15 minutes. 

The second quarter was much slower than the first, with only three goals being scored.  Maritime's James Shubel (Lloyds Neck, NY/Cold Spring Harbor) (Lloyds Neck, NY/Cold Spring Harbor), Alex Korb (Islip, NY/Islip), and Chris Toby (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) each scored in the second.

After the half, the Crusaders came out and scored 4 third period goals, but allowed Maritime to score 5 more.  Down 17-5 after the third, the Privateers scored 6 goals and gave up none to finish the game with a 23-5 victory.

Other Maritime goal scorers included senior captain Donald Toby (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) with 2, Keith Fricke (White Plains, NY/White Plains) (White Plains, NY/White Plains) with 2, Ryan Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) (Islip, NY/Islip) with 2, Michael Bonanza (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Kent) (Staatsburg, NY/Kent School) with 1, Dan Roach (Edgewood, MD/Edgewood) (Edgewood, MD/Edgewood) with 1, and Steve Aughtman (Patchogue-Medford, NY/Patchogue-Medford) (Patchogue-Medford, NY/Patchogue/Medford) with 1. 

Montreuil led the Privateers in assists with 3, followed by Seth Collins (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) (Owego, NY/Owego Free), Andrew Marklin (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) (St. James, NY/Smithtown), Steve Doherty, and Chris Toby (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) with 2 apiece.  Michael Bonanza (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Kent), Keith Fricke (White Plains, NY/White Plains), and Donald Toby (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside)  each recorded 1.

For the Crusaders, Tom Novak (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) scored 3 times and assisted once.  Jeff Bohler (Ephrata, PA/Ephrata) and Ben Stidham (Glen Burnie, MD/Cardinal Gibbons) each scored once, while Chris Bakes (Barto, PA/Boyertown) added an assist.

The Privateers outshot the Crusaders 44-12, and picked up 58 ground balls compared to the 37 by Alvernia.  Maritime won 18 of the 30 face-offs and committed only 5 penalties. 

The Privateers will return to the field on March 7th against Oswego at 7PM.
