Box Score THROGS NECK, NY - Stifling defense was Maritime's key to success in the second half, holding the visiting Bulldogs to 28 points and forcing 6 turnovers enroute to a 95-61 home victory. The Privateers improved to 3-1 on the season going into this weekend's matchup with Farmingdale State. Berkeley still seeks their first win at 0-7.
The Bulldogs kept the game close in the first 10 minutes of the game, pulling to within 2 with under 9 minutes to play. However, the Privateers fought back and took their first double digit lead of the game with 2:36 to go in the half. The half ended with the Privateers ahead by eleven, 44-33.
The second half was a whole new ballgame for the Privateers, as their defense picked up the intensity and their shots found the bottom of the net 62% of the time. Maritime extended their lead to 13 with 12:31 to play, and then took the game to the next level. A 19-3 run over the next six minutes broke the game open, thanks mostly to the stifling defense of the Privateers. The lead for Maritime ballooned to as much as 36, before the final horn sounded for the 34 point win.
Kevin Josey (Staten Island, N.Y./Monroe Webster) (Staten Island, NY/Monroe Webster) led all scorers with 16 points, connecting on 3-7 from behind the arc. Tim Dougherty (Fresh Meadows, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) (Fresh Meadows, NY/St. Francis Prep) recorded his first double-double of the season, with 14 points and 13 rebounds (7 of which came on the offensive end). Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) (Baltimore, MD) and Paul Frazier (Baltimore, MD/Mervo) each finished with 14 points. Andrew Geisel (Media, Pa./Penncrest) (Philadelphia, PA/Penncrest) came off the bench and shot 4-6 for 8 points, while pulling down three rebounds.
