Box Score THROGS NECK, NY - With 5.2 seconds showing on the clock, junior Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) (Baltimore, MD) hit the game winning layup after beating two defenders with a spin move in the lane. The win is Maritime's second of the season (2-1, 1-0) while the Blue Knights drop to 1-3 (0-1).
Cooper led the Privateers with 22 points on 10-15 shooting. He added 6 assists and 3 steals in his first Skyline Conference game as a Privateer. Kevin Josey (Staten Island, N.Y./Monroe Webster) (Staten Island, NY/Monroe Webster) came off the bench and scored a game high 20 points behind a 4-8 performance behind the arc. Paul Frazier (Baltimore, MD/Mervo) had his third double-double in as many games, scoring 13 and pulling down 12 rebounds.
The first half was a see-saw battle, with a total of 5 ties. The Blue Knights held a 9 point advantage at the 14 minute mark, but the Privateers came back with a 10-0 run to regain the lead. The lead was pushed to 8 points but the momentum shifted back to the visitors who eventually tied the game at 34 going into the locker room.
Maritime wasted no time breaking the tie, when Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) (Brooklyn, NY/Middle College) hit the go-ahead jumper in the first 5 minutes. Up 1 with just under 10 minutes to play, the Privateers opened the game up to a 10 point margin, but true to this game, the Blue Knights didn't give up. Mount Saint Mary's fought all the way back to a 73-73 tie with 35 seconds to go, after two free throws by Alex Kuchar. With the ball and the final shot, the Privateers were patient and ran their offense to perfection. A high screen allowed Cooper to spin free of his defender, and gave him a wide open lane to the hoop. The Privateer defense did not allow a last second attempt and the game ended 75-73.
Leading the way for the Knights was Chris Harrison with 31 points, followed by Matt Weinberger with 14 points and 8 assists.
Up next for Maritime is Berkeley College on Thursday in Throgs Neck. The game is slated for an 8:00PM start.
