Box Score THROGS NECK, NY - The Privateer men's soccer team dropped their home conference match against the Panthers of Old Westbury 3-1. Maritime's conference record falls to 1-4-1 (6-8-2 overall) while Old Westbury improved to 3-3 (5-7 overall).
Both defenses played tough all night, with neither team able to control the ball for too long. A breakaway goal by Justin Leakey opened the scoring in the 22nd minute for the Panthers. Less than 7 minutes later, the Panthers would strike again, this time off the foot of Timothy Munzing after getting a perfectly placed ball from Steven Paez. The score would remain 2-0 when the whistle blew to signal the end of the first half.
Maritime cut the lead in half in the 62nd minute, when Mayer Nelson (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) scored his 6th goal in the last two games. His goal was assisted by John Blunden (Arlington, VA/Washington) who passed the ball ahead, over a line of defense, from midfield. With their lead only 1, the Panthers picked it up offensively and scored what proved to be an insurance goal less than 5 minutes later. Justin Leakey scored the goal, for his second of the night.
Both goalkeepers, Darian Bryan and Harris Papson (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) (Flushing, NY/Francis Lewis), stopped 8 shots in 90 minutes. Up next for the Privateers will be the Skyline Conference's top team, St. Joseph's (5-0-1), at home on Saturday evening. The game is slated to start at 7:00 PM.
