THROGGS NECK, NY- Both Maritime's men and womens swim teams were defeated by the College of Staten Island at Staten Island on January 23. The men's team lost by a score of 137-94, while the women were defeated 106-48.
On the men's side, junior David O'Dougherty (Morristown, NJ/Oratory Prep) (Morristown, NJ/ Oratory Prep) earned the team's only first place individual finish, winning the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:00.46. O'Dougherty also came in second in the 200-yard I.M., and was a member of the second-place 200-yard medley relay team.
The Privateers also managed to capture first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team, consisting of John Whiting-Stulz (Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) (Brick, NJ/ Monsignor Donovan), Joseph Smigelski (Derry, NH/Pinkerton Academy) (Derry, NH/ Pinkerton Academy), Brian Day (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus) and Karl Fisher (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) (Forked River, NJ/ Lacey Township), won the event with a time of 1:37.31.
On the women's side, the only first place victory came from the 200-yard freestyle relay, made up of Caroline Hickey (New Orleans, La./DeLasalle) (New Orleans, LA/ DeLasalle), Kyle Kenny (Pearl River, NY/Nanuet) (Pearl River, NY/ Nanuet), Ecarsha Smith (Nassau, Bahamas/St. Augustine College) and Brittany McVea (Camillus, NY/West Genesse) (Camillus, NY/ West Genesse), who won the race with a time of 2:05.01.
The Privateer's next competition will be the Skyline Championships, hosted by SUNY Purchase, on February 9 at 11:00 am.
