THROGGS NECK, NY - The SUNY Maritime men's basketball team picked up their 8th win of the season, and 5th conference victory, after defeating the Fighting Blue Jay of Polytechnic 86-81 at home Wednesday evening.  The Privateers' record now stands at 8-7 (5-3).

Polytechnic opened the game with an 8-0 run over the first four minutes.  However, the Privateers came right back with an 8-0 run to tie the game, sparked by two consecutive possessions with a three pointer.  The game went back and forth over the next 5 minutes until Maritime took the lead at the 12 minute mark, and never gave it up for the rest of the game.  Although the Privateers led by as many as 13 in the first half, the Blue Jays never gave up and brought the score to 50-43 at the half.

The second half was all Maritime, as they pushed the lead to 13 once again with 14 minutes to go.  Polytechnic cut the lead to 2 with seven minutes remaining, but would get no closer.  Quick passes, good shooting, and strong defense down the stretch allowed the Privateers to pull away and pick up their 5th conference win of the season.

Tim Dougherty (Fresh Meadows, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) (Fresh Meadows, NY/St. Francis Prep) led all scorers with 22 points, on 50% shooting from the field.  He pulled down 5 rebounds and had one assist.  Freshman Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) (Brooklyn, NY/Middle College) followed with 20 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 3 steals.  Jamal Webb (Tuckahoe, N.Y./Tuckahoe) (Tuckahoe, NY/Tuckahoe) came 2 assists shy of a triple-double with 17 points, 13 rebounds, and 8 assists.

Polytechnic was led by Jason Buckner with 21 points and 10 rebounds.  Thomas DeMarco and Arjun Ohri each scored 18 in the game.

The Privateers will return to action on January 23rd at Old Westbury.  The game is scheduled to begin at 8PM.
