Box Score THROGGS NECK, NY – The SUNY Maritime women's soccer team dropped their season opening game to New Jersey City University by a final of 6-0. This was also NJCU's first game, so they move up to 1-0.
The Maritime defense opened the game strong, but couldn't hold back the Knights attack for long. Jennifer Albuja (Union City, NJ/Hoboken) scored the first goal 15 minutes into the game. Less than 10 minutes later, Ashley Welch (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Memorial) scored on a penalty kick, after being forced hard to the ground inside the goalie box. Albuja scored three more times in the first half, before Megan Murphy (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) scored the sixth and final goal of the game.
The Privateer defense came out strong in the second half, led by goalkeeper
Krystyn Rutzel (Levittown, NY/Division Ave.) (Levittown, NY/Division Ave.) who stopped all 9 shots she saw. The Privateer offense managed only 1 shot on goal the entire game, taken by
Kelly Carroll (Bethany Beach, Del./Indian River) (Bethany Beach, DE/Indian River) in the second half.
The Privateers return to action on Friday, September 7th at the Rutgers-Newark tournament. Their first match will be against Medgar Evers at 4:00 PM, with the Consolation and Championship games being played on Saturday at 4 PM and 7 PM.
