THROGGS NECK, NY – The SUNY Maritime men's soccer team overcame a 2 goal deficit to defeat the Dolphins of mount Saint Vincent 4-3. This was both teams' Skyline Conference opening game. Mount Saint Vincent falls to 1-5 (0-1) while Maritime improves to 4-2 (1-0).

The game started off slow, with Maritime controlling the ball but not able to get many shots off in the opening 20 minutes. As the Dolphin offense starting to come alive, momentum shifted to the visitors and Chris Herrera opened the scoring. Less than 3 minutes later, Papa Guyere intercepted a rebound off a Maritime attempted clear, and found the back of the net to give the Dolphins a 2-0 lead. Mount Saint Vincent held the two goal advantage until James Salka (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) scored off a sideline pass from Emilio Andino (Roselle, NJ/Abraham Clark) (Roselle, NY/Roselle) with only 38 seconds left in the half. The first half ended with Maritime down 2-1.

The deficit was short lived, as the Privateers came out in the second half firing. Two minutes in, Robert Christiansen (Mecklenburg, N.C./East Mecklenburg) (Charlotte, NC/East Mecklenburg) took a pass from Patrick Masango (Baltimore, MD/Phs Kumba) (Baltimore, MD/Phs Kumba) and slipped it by the goalkeeper to knot the score at 2-2. Masango would score 13 minutes later off a pass from Nihat Mazman (Iskenderun, Turkey/Ziyakalkavan) (Iskenderun, TKY/Ziyakalkavan) to give the Privateers their first lead of the game. Masango added another assist on the night, this time to Melih Akyildiz (Eskisehir, TKY/Atayurt) which proved to be the game winning goal.

A red card on Mazman in the 75th minute, gave the Dolphins a man advantage, but they couldn't get past a stifling Privateer defense. Mike Hernandez added the final goal for the Dolphins, with under 2 minutes to play, off a penalty kick.

Matthew Kavanaugh (Penfield, NY/Penfield) recorded the win for the Privateers with 4 saves. Maritime will be home on Monday against the City College of New York at 7PM.
