Donald Toby (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) had a career high eight goals, 26 ground balls and won 31 out of the 34 face-offs he took, but his efforts weren’t enough as the Privateers come up on the short end of a heartbreaking 18-17 game against Skyline Conference rival Kean University in men’s lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Reinhart Field in Throggs Neck, NY.
It was a day of ups and downs for the Privateers who fell behind a couple of times, but always managed to fight their way right back into the game. Trailing by five goals in the second period, they closed the half out with three unanswered goals to head into the half trailing 11-8. Each team would score three goals in the third period, keep the deficit at three heading into the final period.
Trailing late in the fourth period, the Privateers would score three quick goals, including the first career goal for senior Tim O’Hara (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) who recently made the transition from goalkeeper to attack. The small run would bring Maritime to within one goal, 17-16, but Kean would once again pull away, as junior attack Dennis Lukacsko (Lincoln Park, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) the game winner with 4:14 left in the game. He led the Cougars with four goals.
Senior attack Steve Gill (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) and freshman midfielder Anthony Bertucci (Edison, NJ/Edison) added three goals each. Freshman attack Scott Leathem (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) had a game high three assists for the Cougars.
The freshman attack duo of
Lawrence Montreuil (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park) and
Max Ferguson (Rockville Centre, NY/Chaminade) (Rockville Centre, NY/Chaminade) each added three goals for the Privateers, while three others each had one goal.

Colin Gallagher (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) made 11 saves and gave up eight goals in 37 minutes of action, while sophomore
Joseph Fasano (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) had five saves and ten goals against in 23 minutes of play. Junior
Dave Nichols (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) made 18 saves in net for the Cougars.
Maritime returns to action on Wednesday, April 18 when they travel to Purchase, NY to face the Valiants of Manhattanville College for a 7:00 p.m. game.
