Lakers outlast Privateers, handing Maritime first loss of '07

Throggs Neck, NY – Freshman attack Lawrence Montreuil (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park) put forth another three goal performance for the Privateers of Maritime College, but it would be the Lakers of Oswego State who pick up a 10-8 victory in a very exciting men’s lacrosse match-up Friday night at Reinhart Field in Throggs Neck, NY.  
 
Oswego got on the board first via an unassisted effort from junior midfielder Dan Rogers (Boston, NY/Frontier) with 10:36 left in the first period. Rogers dominated face-offs for the Lakers, winning 15 of the 17 face-offs he took.  Maritime would respond to Rogers’ goal with three unanswered goals to carry a 3-1 lead heading into the second period.
 
In the second, Oswego would go on a 3-0 run including two goals by junior attack Ryan Rossborough (Conesus, NY/Livonia) to tie the game at 4-4. Following matching goals, the score after on half was 5-5. Rossborough finished the game with three goals.
 
In the third, a goal by sophomore attack Dan Roach (Edgewood, MD/Edgewood) (Edgewood, MD/Edgewood) would give Maritime their final lead of the game 6-5. The Lakers then went on a 5-0 scoring run that spanned most of the third and fourth periods.  
 
Junior attack Mike Strohm’s (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) goal with 8:21 left in the third period gave the Lakers a 7-6 advantage, an advantage they would never relinquish. Strohm finished the night with two goals and three assists.
 
Sophomore keeper Joseph Fasano (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) records his first loss of the season, allowing sevens in 37:47 of play. Freshman Colin Gallagher (Minneapolis, Minn./Westhill) (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) relieved Fasano in the third period, making seven saves and allowing three goals in a little over 22 minutes of action. Laker keeper Matt Pfister (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medord) earned his first victory of the season, making 12 saves and allowing eight goals in 60 minutes of play.
 
The Privateers (2-1) return to action next Saturday, March 17 when they head to Hackettstown, NJ to face the Cyclones of Centenary College for a 1:00 p.m. Skyline Conference game. Last season, Maritime defeated the Cyclones 13-11, Centenary leads the all-time series 4-2.
