THROGGS NECK, NY - The SUNY Maritime men's basketball team ended the week at a perfect 2-0, after beating Mount Saint Vincent this afternoon 81-72.  The Privateers improved to 5-3 (3-1) while the Dolphins fell to 3-4 (0-3).

Maritime opened the game very aggressive, jumping out to a 19-2 lead 5 minutes into the game.  The defense continued to cause havoc, allowing the Dolphins only 7 points in the first 10 minutes of play.  During the first 10 minutes, the defense caused turnovers and bad shots, while the offense connected for 31 points.  The 24 point advantage was more than enough to help Maritime weather the runs of the Dolphins.  Maritime went into the locker room at the half with a 14 point advantage (48-34).

Although outscored in the second half (38-33), the Privateers never gave back the lead and never let the game get closer than 8 points.  Tough defense limited the Dolphins to 24-61 shooting (39%) and a dismal 2-14 (14%) from three point range.  Mount Saint Vincent connected on 22-26 free throws, which kept them in the game late.

Maritime's offense was very strong, connecting on 32-58 (55%) for the game and 27% from three point range.  Four players scored in double figures for the Privateers, who were led by Kirk McRae (Brooklyn, N.Y./George Westinghouse) (Brooklyn, NY/George Westinghouse) with 14 points and 10 rebounds (7 of which were on the offensive boards).  Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) (Brooklyn, NY/Middle College) and Jamal Webb (Tuckahoe, N.Y./Tuckahoe) (Tuckahoe, NY/Tuckahoe) each scored 13, while Jermelle Fraser (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman) (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman) added 12 off the bench.

For the Dolphins, Kevin Garlan led the way with 20 points and 6 boards, followed by Justin Baylosis with 16 points and Kyle Byrons with 11.

The players will spend the next few days studying for finals before getting back on the court against Mount Saint Mary's in Newburgh NY.  The game is scheduled for Wednesday at 7PM (time likely to be changed, please check the website).
