Basketball Falls in Championship of Maritime Tip-Off

THROGGS NECK, NY - The SUNY Maritime men's basketball team fell in the Championship game of the Maritime Tip-Off tournament to Coast Guard, by a final of 76-63.  The Bears improved to 2-0 while Maritime dropped to 1-1.

The Privateers played a tough game, taking a 39-37 lead into the locker room at the half.  The defense held the Bears to 0-6 on three point shots in the first half, ad out rebounded them 28-11.  The offense shot 41% from the field in th first, and 4-13 from behind the arc. 

The second half saw Maritime extend their lead to as much as 7, but the Bears wore them down with strong post play and tough defense.  Craig Johnson led Coast Guard with 29 points and 13 boards, taking 13 free throws and making 11.  His teammate post player Jeff Prebeck followed with 24 points on 10-16 shooting.

The Privateers had a balanced attack, with Joe Bracaglia (Jamaica, NY/Martin Van Buren) leading the way with 13 points.  Jamal Webb (Tuckahoe, N.Y./Tuckahoe) (Tuckahoe, NY/Tuckahoe) followed with 11 and led the tea with 8 rebounds.  Seven other Privateers scored on the evening.

The All-Tournament Team consisted of Coast Guard's Johnson and Prebeck, Maritime's Rahshawn Pringle (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglas) (Bronx, NY/Frederick Douglas) and Bracaglia, and John Stiles from California Maritime.

The Privateers next game will be on the road against Lehman on Tuesday at 7:00 PM.
