Football Drops Final Home Game to Newport News

THROGGS NECK, NY – The SUNY Maritime football team dropped their final home game of the season to Newport News Apprentice School by a final of 60-0. The Builders improved their record to 3-4, while the Privateers fell to 2-6.
 
The Privateer offense struggled all afternoon, gaining only 62 total rushing yards (33 attempts) and passing for 30 total yards. Maritime's leading rusher, Ben Swedish (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point), was limited to only 31 yards on 11 carries, while freshman quarterback Michael Smooke (Land O'Lakes, FL/East Lake (FL)) (Land O'Lakes, FL/East Lake) recorded 16 net rushing yards on 12 attempts. Greg Campisi (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) had 31 receiving yards on two catches.
 
Defensively, the Privateers were led by AJ Gillilan (Alamonte Springs, FL/Lyman) (Alamonte Springs, FL/Lyman) who had 10 total tackles, a tackle for a loss, and a pass break up. Vincent Dima (Centereach, NY/Centereach) (Centereach, NY/Centereach) followed with 5.5 tackles.
 
The Builder offense amassed 341 yards on the ground, led by Sam Arnold with 202 and a long of 43. The air attack was equally successful, with quarterback Kyle Franklin throwing for 225 yards and three touchdowns, on a 13 for 16 performance. Travis Reid was on the receiving end of 8 of those passes, totaling 160 yards and all three scores.
