Stolberg's 25 points leads Privateers over Dolphins, 83-72

Throggs Neck, NY – Junior forward Michael Stolberg (Bayside, N.Y./Holy Cross) (Bayside, NY/Holy Cross) scored a career high 25 points to lead the Privateer of Maritime College to their first Skyline Conference win of the season, defeating the Dolphins of the College of Mount Saint Vincent, 83-72 Saturday afternoon in men’s basketball action in Throggs Neck, NY.  
 
Maritime (2-12, 1-4) shot 50.8 percent from the field and 57.1 percent from downtown. On defense, the Privateers held the Dolphins (1-12, 0-5) to just 29 points in the second half.
 
Sophomore guard Joseph Bracaglia (Jamaica, N.Y./Martin Van Buren) (Jamaica, NY/Martin Van Buren) hit a three pointer in the opening seconds of the game to give the Privateers a 3-2 lead; this would be their last lead until the second half. Bracglia went on to finish the game with 11 points and four assists.
 
After trailing by as much as 12 points, the Privateers began to fight back towards the end of the first half to bring the deficit to just five heading into the half. On a made three pointer by sophomore guard Kenneth Kelly (Belle Harbor, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) (Belle Harbor, NY/Archbishop Molloy) with 12:24 left in the game, Maritime would take a 56-53 lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. Kelly finished with 13 points, shooting 4-of-8 from three-point range.
 
The Privateer bench also came up big, outscoring the Dolphins bench 27-19 thanks to sophomore forward Timothy Dougherty (Fresh Meadows, NY/St. Francis Prep) who scored 17, 11 in the second half. Junior guard Lamar Fields (Bronx, NY/Rice) had a career high 15 rebounds and also scored six points in 20 minutes off the bench.
 
Freshman forward Kevin Garlan (Jackson Heights, NY/Archbishop Molloy) caught on fire early for the Dolphins scoring 14 points in the first half, but was held scoreless in the second half. Junior guard Derek Charlton (Yonkers, NY/St. Raymonds) led the Dolphins with 20 points, scoring 12 in the first half. Freshman forward P.J. Ratzke (Riverhead, NY/Riverhead) helped keep the Dolphins in the game in the second half, hitting 3-of-4 from three-point range to score 11 points, 13 total on the day.
 
Maritime returns to action on Tuesday, January 16 when they host the rival Mariners of the Merchant Marine Academy for a 7pm game. In their last meeting, the Privateers earned the home victory, defeating the Mariners 50-46 back on February 3, 2006.
