Purchase, NY – Freshman forward Mehmet Alkan (Turkey/Ozel Cent) scored two goals to lift the Privateers of Maritime College over the Valiants of Mahattnaville College, 2-1 in a Skyline Conference men’s soccer match-up Wednesday night in Purchase, NY.

 

Alkan got Maritime on the board thirty minutes into the game, scoring on a pass from sophomore midfielder Emilio Andino (Roselle, NJ/Abraham Clark) (Roselle, NJ/Abraham Clark). The Privateers would hold a 1-0 lead until the 68th minute when Valiant midfielder Chris Myrtos (Scarborough, ON) found Brandon Magestro (Anchorage, AK) to tie the game.  

 

Alkan would score the game-winning goal with just over three minutes left in the game, beating the Valiant keeper again on a pass from Andino. This was Alkan’s fourth goal of the season.

 

Tonight’s game was a huge victory for the Privateers, who improve to and 1-1-1 in the Skyline and move into a tie for fourth place with Manhattanville. This was Maritime's first victory over Manhattanville since the Valiants joined the Skyline Conference. After starting the season at 4-0-1, the Valiants now find themselves at 4-3-2.

 

Privateer goalkeeper Matt Kavanaugh (Penfield, NY/Penfield) (Penfield, NY/Penfield) finished the game with four saves while sophomore Gerard Tellier (West Warwick, RI) had six saves for the Valiants.

 

The Privateers will return to action on Monday, October 2 when they host the Cougars of Medgar Evers College for a 6:00 pm game. The last time these two teams squared-off, the Privateers took a 4-1 win over the Cougars on September 13, 2004.
