Greg Campisi (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) made his first career start at quarterback for the Privateers, leading all passers with 44-yards and a touchdown, but it would be the Cadets of Norwich University that walk away with a 41-14 victory in a Division III football game on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Maritime College.
Maritime’s defense once again put in a solid effort, forcing four turnovers that resulted in all of the Privateers points. Freshman defensive back
Thant Zin Phyo (Brooklyn, NY/Fort Hamilton) (Brooklyn, NY/Fort Hamilton) scored a defensive touchdown for the second week in a row, returning a blocked punt for 23-yards to make the score 27-14 with 11:23 left in the game. Freshman linebacker
Emery Persinger (Cheswick, PA/Deer Lakes) (Cheswick, PA/Deer Lakes) finished the day with a game high, eight tackles and also had an interception which he returned for 27-yards. Freshmen
Troy Smith (Brooklyn, NY/Fort Hamilton) (Brooklyn, NY/Fort Hamilton) and
Marcello Murillo (Harrison, NJ/Queen of Peace) (Harrison, NJ/Queen of Peace) rounded things out on defense for the Privateers with 7.5 and 7.0 tackles respectively.
The Cadets backfield came up big, rushing for 203 yards against the number four ranked rushing defense in the nation. Sophomore running back Darnell Jackson (Miami, FL/Parkway Academy) led the way with 100 yards and one touchdown, while sophomore receiver Kevin Ober (Medway, MA/Medway) finished with 91 yards rushing and one touchdown on the ground.
Norwich’s defense also made a big contribution, forcing six Privateer turnovers that resulted in five of the Cadets six touchdowns. The Cadets defense was led by senior linebacker Greg Abril (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/Northeast) who finished the day with five tackles and also had an interception returning for ten yards. Also adding defensive touchdowns were senior linebacker Paul Bagordo (Sparta, NJ/Lenape Valley Reg.) who recovered a fumble in the end zone for the 0-yard score and freshman defensive back Antonio Goodman (Winter Haven, FL/Winter Haven) who ran back a pick, 35-yards to give Norwich their final touchdown of the game.
After today’s win, the Cadets of Norwich University improve their record to 2-2 overall, while the Privateers of Maritime College fall to 0-2 on the year.
