Box Score Throggs Neck, NY – Freshman running back Benjamin Sweedish (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) had an incredible game, rushing for 132 yards on 20 carries, but it wouldn’t be enough to stop a fourth quarter run by the Bison of Gallaudet University who came out with a 18-13 victory over the Privateers on Saturday in Throggs Neck, NY.
Defensively, Maritime got a huge boost from freshman
Thant Zin Phyo (Brooklyn, NY/Fort Hamilton) (Brooklyn, NY/Fort Hamilton) who recovered a fumble at the Maritime four-yard line and ran it back 96-yards for a touchdown to give the Privateers a 13-6 lead. The Privateers also got nice contributions from freshmen
Emery Persinger (Cheswick, PA/Deer Lakes) (Cheswick, PA/Deer Lakes), Marcello Murillo (Harrison, NJ/Queen of Peace) (Harrison, NY/Queen of Peace) and
Troy Smith (Brooklyn, NY/Fort Hamilton) (Brooklyn, NY/Fort Hamilton).
Persinger led the team with six total tackles, while
Smith and
Murillo each finished with five total tackles.
Gallaudet was led on offense by running back Robert Haney, Jr. who ran for 103 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown on a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter. On defense, linebacker Calvin Doudt finished the day with 11 solo tackles and one assisted tackle.
On their second possession of the game, the Privateers took the ball 80-yards down the field and got into the end zone on a 3-yard run by quarterback
Zach Townsend (Corning, NY/Corning East) (Corning, NY/Corning East) that gave them a 7-0 lead. Townsend finished the game with 73 yards on the ground and a touchdown.
The Bison would answer back with a 40 second drive that was highlighted by a 51-yard touchdown run from running back Tamir Armwood. However, a failed point after attempt left the score at 7-6 in favor of Maritime.
The Bison were then halted at the 4-yard line when Phyo forced the fumble that he recovered and ran back to put the Privateers up 13-6. Later in the quarter, Gallaudet looked to tie up the game after quarterback Jason Coleman found Chester Kuschmider for a 22-yard touchdown reception, but would once again fail on the point after attempt and trailed 13-12 heading into the intermission.
After a scoreless third quarter, Gallaudet would score the only points of the second half following Haney’s 3-yard run to take an 18-13 lead capping off a 75-yard, 11 play drive.
The Privateers return to action on Saturday, when they host the Cadets of Norwich College with kick-off set for Noon. Saturday’s contest will mark the first meeting between Norwich and Maritime in football.
