Throggs Neck, NY – During one of many busy weekends for the Privateer sailing team, four individuals headed down to compete in the ODU South #1 Open hosted by Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA during the weekend of March 4th to the 5th. During the two day event, 17 teams from across the east coast competed in a total of 28 races, 14 per each division.
Freshman
Morly Flynn and sophomore
Mark Hammond (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) finished seventh overall in the A division, while sophomore
Patrick O’Connor and freshman
Matt Brink took 11th place in the B division. Although performing well, both teams struggled slightly as the weekend progressed due to a decrease in wind gusts. What were once 15-22 mph winds on the first day of competition had dropped as low as 8 mph by the second day. The change in gusts made it a more challenging day for the Privateers, but they were still able to make a solid finish, 8th place in the overall combined standings, just edging out Kings Point and Fordham.
This was one of two events that the Privateers competed in during the weekend. They also sent a crew of team members to compete in the John Jackson Team Race, hosted by Georgetown University in Washington, DC. There will be more information regarding that team race, including full results later in the week.
