Box Score Throggs Neck, NY – To say that freshman forward Timothy Dougherty (Fresh Meadows, NY/St. Francis Prep) has picked up his game as of late is an understatement. The freshman guard exploded Wednesday night for a new career high of 34 points as the Privateers defeated Centenary College in their only meeting of the season, 83-59 in a Skyline Conference men’s basketball game in Throggs Neck.
The Privateers appeared to be a little offbeat in the early minutes of this game, but would slowly get things going. A little over two minutes into the game, Centenary would take a 4-2 lead on a jumper by junior Steve McNamara. However, that would be their only lead of the game as Maritime slowly began to come out of their funk and start to put points on the board. Although there were no big scoring streaks during the first half, Maritime would build up a 13 point lead with 2:15 left to go in the half and they would hold an eight point lead heading into the second half.
Maritime opened up the second half with a 7-0 scoring run that would give them a 13 point lead. The Privateers would have a couple more scoring runs in the half as they pushed the lead to 37 with 4:51 left to go. As hope for a comeback seemed to be fading away, both coaches would make the decision to empty their benches and give the younger talent a chance for some time on the court.
It was apparently a physical game as there were a total of 46 fouls called which included a double-technical and three flagrant foul calls. The Privateers were hurt by the fouls as three of their starters spent a majority of the second half with four fouls. Freshman forward
John Foley (Valley Stream, N.Y./Holy Cross) (Valley Stream, NY/Holy Cross), who had a career best game on Monday, provided some relief off the bench, but he would ultimately foul out after spending only ten minutes on the court.
Dougherty’s 34 points marks the most points scored by anyone on the Privateers in the past two seasons. The prior team high was held by senior center
Robert Benton (Montgomery, Ala./G.W. Carver) (Montgomery, AL/GW Carver) who netted 33 earlier in the year against Mount Saint Mary. He also once again matched his career high in rebounds with 15 boards.
Also contributing to the Privateers success was the starting backcourt as seniors
Gerard Danzy (Monroeville, Ala./Hillcrest) (Monroeville, AL/Hillcrest) and Marc Lashley (Queens, N.Y./Holy Cross) (Queens, NY/Holy Cross) both finished in double figures.
Danzy finished tonight’s game with 17 points after only scoring four in the first half. He also matched his career high of nine assists, providing some of the best dishes the team has seen all season.
Having a very quiet season, Lashley managed to tie his best point total of the last two seasons, scoring 16 points. The last time he put up that point total was on February 11th, 2005 against Yeshiva.
Sophomore standout, Alex Kuchar (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) was the leading scorer for the Cyclones with 15 points, he was joined by senior guard Andre Harris (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) who finished with 11 points and 14 rebounds.
Today’s game improves the Privateers to 6-16 on the year and 2-9 in the Skyline. Centenary drops to 2-20 and remain winless in the Skyline at 0-13. Maritime will now have a week to prepare for their next opposition, Old Westbury. When these two teams met earlier in the year, the Privateers dropped a 66-60 decision at home. Maritime will now hope to turn the tables and hand Westbury a home loss. That game will take place on Tuesday, February 14th from the Clark Athletic Center in Old Westbury, NY.
