Throggs Neck, NY - Privateer Sailing opened up their 2006 campaign in St. Petersburg, FL, taking part in the Mendelblatt Team Race Intersectional. Team Racing is new for Maritime, and in their first event, they sent a team comprised of four freshmen and two juniors.
On the first day of racing, there were south winds ranging from 10 knots to 18 knots. However, a major front hit from the northwest, forcing the day to come to an early end after only 19 of the planned 42 races had been completed.
During the second day of competition, winds stood at a steady 18 to 19 knots with the highest gusts coming in at 25 knots from the northwest. Temperatures were in the low 50’s, slightly colder than the mid-60’s experienced during the prior day.
Maritime finished the double round robin in fourth place with a 5-5 record, advancing to the final four round over the University of South Alabama and the University of Florida, Gainesville. The Privateers faced off against tougher competition and finished the final four round in fourth place behind teams from the University of South Florida, College of Charleston and Eckerd College. Head Coach Dan Pletsch was pleased with how the weekend went, and is looking forward to the other four team events that the Privateers will compete in this season.
