Throggs Neck, NY – Tonight could have been a look into the future of this Privateer program as it would be the on-point shooting and overall solid play of two talented neophytes leading the Privateers to their first victory in almost a month. Freshmen Timothy Dougherty (Fresh Meadows, NY/St. Francis Prep) and Kenneth Kelly (Belle Harbor, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) (Belle Harbor, NY/Archbishop Molloy) combined for 47 points, 28 of which came in the second half as the Privateers take a much needed win over the Cougars of Medgar Evers 82-68 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Maritime.

Coming into tonight’s game, the Privateers had lost two straight games after holding leads of 17 or more points. During the first couple of minutes, it appeared as if their poor shooting from the second half of Monday night’s game carried over as they trailed 16-6 just seven minutes in, shooting 3-for-8 and 0-for-4 from the charity stripe.

After over ten minutes of basketball, the Privateers were finally able to shake off their shooting woes, and began to heat up from downtown as Kelly and Dougherty sank a couple of consecutive three-pointers to bring the Privateers to within six points. After trading a couple of baskets, the Privateers would end up heading into the locker room down by four points at the intermission.

The second half went totally in Maritime’s favor as they quickly diminished their deficit and took their first lead of the game following a jumper by Kelly with 14:05 on the clock. Once in control of the game, Maritime would never relinquish their lead.

However, Medgar would not go down without a fight as they managed to stay within a couple of baskets. With under a minute to go, a quick three-pointer by junior forward Travis Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY/Westinghouse) brought the lead under ten points. However, following a made Maritime free-throw, senior guard Marc Lashley (Queens, N.Y./Holy Cross) (Queens, NY/Holy Cross) intercepted the ensuing inbound pass which led to a two handed jam by senior guard Gerard Danzy (Monroeville, Ala./Hillcrest) (Monroeville, AL/Hillcrest) that ended any chance for a Cougar comeback. Lashley would then once again steal the inbound pass and put in the easy lay-in stretching the Privateer lead to 14 points.

Dougherty led all scorers with his career high 27 points and tied a career high of 15 rebounds. Kelly finished with 20 points, sinking six from downtown, while senior center Robert Benton (Montgomery, Ala./G.W. Carver) (Montgomery, AL/GW Carver) added his usual 17 points.

Kennedy led the way for the Cougars, scoring 17 points and pulled down eight boards. He was joined by freshman guard Thomas Armstrong (Brooklyn, NY/Transit Tech) with 15 points and sophomore forward Kenneth Griffin (Brooklyn, NY/Transit Tech) with 12 points.

This was a big win for Maritime who breaks a six game skid, pushing their record to 4-15 overall. This Friday, the Privateers will get the big rematch they have all be waiting for as the Mariners of Kings Point will be in town after stealing a 56-54 win in their house a month ago. Friday's game is set to begin at 7:00pm, so be sure to come out and support your Privateers as they look to defeat Kings Point at home for the first time in almost 12 years.
