Seniors excel for men's swimming at Kings Point

Throggs Neck, NY – Competing at the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY on Monday, the Privateer men’s swimming team wasn’t able to overcome the Mariners, falling to a 155-73 decision. In women’s swimming action, the Privateers competed in a double-dual meet against USMMA and Purchase College, just coming up short against both teams.
 
Seniors Al Juergens (Boylston, MA/New Fairfield) (Boylston, MA/New Fairfield), Joseph Stredny (Harveys Lake, PA/Dallas) (Harveys Lake, PA/Dallas) and Drew Gossoo (Marlborough, CT/Xavier) (Marlborough, CT/Xavier) continue to excel for the Privateers, each finishing the event with second place finishes. Juergens placed second in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:49.00, Stredny finished second in the 100 yard freestyle [51.06], while Gossoo had his second place finish in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:10.11.  
 
Competing in his first year of collegiate swimming, junior Thomas Williams (Cheektowaga, NY/W. Seneca East) had a personal best in the 200 yard IM, finishing fourth with a time of 2:24.12. Williams, a three-year letter winner in cross country, is one of several members of the men’s team who are multi-sport athletes competing in their first season of collegiate swimming. Making contributions at Monday’s event, sophomore James Salka (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville), a two-year letter winner on the men’s soccer team, had a second place finish in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.02. Standout cross country runner, Clint Watson (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury), finished third in the same event with a time of 1:12.21.  
 
On the women’s side, sophomore Alice Mayer (Wolcott, N.Y./North Rose-Wolcott) (Wolcott, NY/North Rose-Wolcott) earned a second place finish in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 1:06.23. Junior Brittany McVea (Camillus, NY/West Genesse) (Camillus, NY/West Genesse), sophomore Diane Kruse (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St. Anthony's) (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St. Anthony's) and freshman Joanne Rydzewski (Floral Park, NY/Mary Louis Academy) (Floral Park, NY) each had a fourth place finish for the women’s team.
 
In the diving portion of the day, junior Alyson Paz (Point Lookout, NY/Long Beach) (Point Lookout, NY/Long Beach) came in third place with a 139.13 combined score, while senior Michael Mutch (Hicksville, NY/Chaminade) (Hicksville, NY/Chaminade) also finished third with a 133.50 combined score for the men’s team.
 
The men’s and women’s teams will return to action on Tuesday, December 5 when they travel across town to take on the Lightning of Lehman College, start time is scheduled for 7pm.
