Throggs Neck, NY – A wild game that saw 30 foul calls and two penalty kicks ends a Privateer three game win streak as they fell to the Bearcats of Baruch College, 3-2, in non-conference men’s soccer game Saturday afternoon at Reinhart Field in Throggs Neck, NY.

Freshman forward Mehmet Alkan (Turkey/Ozel Cent) scored his eighth goal of the season twelve minutes into the game, beating out the Bearcat keeper to give the Privateers an early 1-0 advantage. This marked the fifth consecutive game that Alkan has scored the first goal by either team.

Baruch tied the game at 1-1 following an unassisted goal by junior Roberto Oporto (Queens, NY/Peru) at 23:57 for Baruch’s only goal of the first half. The Privateers then answered back with a goal by sophomore Nelson Mayer (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) who lifted a shot over the charging Bearcat goalie to give the Privateers a 2-1 advantage heading into the intermission.

However, Baruch would once again tie the game following a completed penalty kick by senior Soug Foon Choa (Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) just three minutes into the second half.

The game-winning goal was scored by senior Alex Sokol (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) who found himself all alone heading towards the net as the Privateers were looking for an offsides call. Sokol would tap one into the net after catching the Privateer keeper at the top of the box, giving Baruch the 3-2 lead.

The Privateers had several plays at the net in the final five minutes of the game, including a penalty kick from Nelson that was stopped in the air by DiBastiano.

Junior keeper Matt Kavanaugh (Penfield, NY/Penfield) (Penfield, NY/Penfield) had a rough outing, only stopping five shots, while the sophomore Nelson DiBastiano (Queens, NY/St. Francis Prep) also finished with five saves for Baruch.
