Greg Campisi (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) had a monster game, totaling 183 yards of offense and scoring three touchdowns to lead the Privateers of Maritime College over the Hawks of Becker College, 29-16, to earn the programs first NCAA win in football action Saturday after noon at Reinhart Field in Throggs Neck, NY.
Campisi was the game leader in rushing, carrying the ball 39 times for 142 yards and two touchdowns. He also completed two of five passes for 41 yards including a 24-yard touchdown pass to senior
Marc Kunchev (Angola, NY/Lake Shore) (Angola, NY/Lake Shore),
Kunchev’s first of the season.
Freshman running backs
Chris Delano (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman) (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman) and
Jonathan Peoples (Kannapolis, NC/A.L. Brown) (Kannapolis, NC/A.L. Brown) each contributed to the Privateers rushing totals. Delano finished the day with 49 yards on six carries while Peoples had 47 yards on seven carries and a 34-yard touchdown run.
Defensively, the Privateers were led by senior defensive lineman
Arlis Steel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) (Lawton, OK/Lawton) who finished out the day with five solo tackles, one assisted and 3.5 sacks. Freshman defensive lineman
Ryan Mallon (Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) (Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) had a career best with five solo tackles and a forced fumble. Rounding out the defense was freshman defensive back
Jack Edmund (Alturas, FL/Bartow) (Alturas, FL/Bartow) who finishes the day with four solo tackles and two blocked punts.
Becker College (1-7) was led on offense by freshman quarterback
Shane Swift (Worcester, MA/South) who totaled 116 yards on 12-of-26 passing. Becker’s only offensive touchdown was scored on a five yard run by freshman running back
Paul Casamir (Miami, FL/Archbishop Carrol), Casimir finished the day with 32 yards on six carries. Becker’s first touchdown of the game came on an 85-yard punt return by sophomore wide receiver
Acie Johnson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) that tied the game at 7-7. Their final two points was awarded via a safety when Privateer punter
Klestor Pellumbi (Astoria, NY/Christopher Columbus) chose to step out of bounds instead of punting from his own end zone.
On defense, Becker got huge contributions from defensive linemen Gary Clark (Wethersfield, CT/Chenny Tech) and Ryan VanOverloop (Waterford, CT/Waterford) who each finished with 11 solo tackles and one assisted.
Today’s win marks the first NCAA victory for the Privateers since the program was reinstated in 2005. This is the team’s second win of the season after defeated Walter Reed earlier in the season. The Privateers 2006 record now improves to 1-5 versus NCAA competition and 1-1 versus non-NCAA.
The Privateers return to action in two weeks when they will travel to Newton, MA to face the Mustangs of Mount Ida College on Saturday, November 11. This will be the Privateers final game of the 2006 season; kick-off is scheduled for high Noon.
