Builders take first Mariner's Cup

Newport News, VA – In the first meeting between the two institutions in any sport, the Maritime College football team was shutdown by the Builders of the Apprentice School 41-0 in the first Mariner’s Classic on Saturday, October 21 in Newport News, VA.
 
The Privateers struggled against a strong Builder defense, totaling just 74 yards on the ground and 13 in the air. Freshman running back Benjamin Swedish (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) ran for just 29 yards on ten carries and running back Jonathan Peoples (Kannapolis, NC/A.L. Brown) (Kannapolis, NC/A.L. Brown) finished with 28 yards on five carries.
 
Freshmen defensive backs Troy Smith (Brooklyn, NY/Fort Hamilton) (Brooklyn, NY/Fort Hamilton) and Marcello Murillo (Harrison, NJ/Queen of Peace) (Harrison, NJ/Queen of Peace) led the Privateer defense with 8.5 and 8.0 total tackles respectively. Senior nose tackle Olando Robinson (Hampton, VA/Hampton) was the Builders defensive leader with six total tackles, while senior linebacker Leroy Bracey (Lugoff, SC/Camden) finished the day with five solo tackles.
 
The Builders were led offensively by senior running back Bruce Freeman (Laurinburg, NC/Scotland) who rushed for a 110 of the team’s 279 yards and two touchdowns.
 
The Builders, who improved to 4-3 overall following Saturday’s win, are now in possession of the Mariner’s Trophy, which they will retain until October 20, 2007 when these two teams meet again at the home of the Privateers in Throggs Neck, NY.
 
The Privateers return to action this Saturday, October 28 when they host the Hawks of Becker College in their final home game of the 2006 season. Kickoff is set for 1:00pm.
