Delles nets first career goal to lead Privateers to first win in program history

Throggs Neck, NY – Freshman forward Sam Delles (Tully, NY/Tully) (Tully, NY/Tully) chose the perfect time to score her first collegiate goal, netting the go ahead goal  to give the Privateers of Maritime College their first win in program history, 3-2 over the Fighting Blue Jays of Polytechnic University Thursday evening in women’s soccer action in Throggs Neck, NY.
 
In a game of firsts for the Privateers, freshman midfielder Heather Christiansen (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) starting things off with her first collegiate goal, scoring 28 minutes into the contest on a pass from Delles. However, the Blue Jays would answer back on a successful penalty kick attempt by freshman forward Natasha Taylor (Standish, ME/Bonny Eagle) at 36:37 to tie the game at 1-1.
 
A little over three and a half minutes into the second half, the Privateers would regain the lead on a goal by junior midfielder Kelly Carroll (Bethany Beach, Del./Indian River) (Bethany Beach, DE/Indian River), her first of the season. Carroll’s goal was assisted by junior Mackenzie Hough (Johnstown, PA/Bishop McCourt) (Johnstown, PA/Bishop McCourt), the first of her career.
 
The Blue Jays continued to fight back as Taylor sent a shot over the Privateer keeper's head to tie things up at 2-2 with less than 20 minutes left on the clock. A minute later, Delles skipped a shot to the lower left corner of the net for the game-winner giving the Privateers their first win in the program’s two year history.
 
Senior keeper Kristin Johnston (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) picks up her first win in net, stopping five of the nine shots she faced. Junior Jacqueline Calandriello (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) finished with 14 saves for the Blue Jays.
 
Carroll’s goal was the fourth of her career and her ninth point to make her the all-time leading scorer in program history.
 
Maritime returns to action this Saturday, October 21 at 1:00pm when they host Saint Joseph’s College in their final Skyline Conference game of the 2006 season.
