Box Score Throggs Neck, NY – Sophomore guard
Nikero Barbes (Freeport, Bahamas/Freeport Angelican) (Freeport, Bahamas/Anglican) had a career high game scoring 20 points, but that was just about all the offense that Coach Tom Spina could get out of his Privateers as Farmingdale State coasted to an early 20 point lead and never looked back taking a 69-52 victory in a Skyline Conference men’s basketball game at Maritime on Tuesday evening.
Coming off of their most least productive game of the season, the Rams started tonight’s game on an unbelievable 28-4 run that culminated with the team’s sixth made three-pointer with just 9:31 on the game clock. They would finish the first half with nine made three’s, shooting 56.3 percent from downtown.
Despite Maritime’s shaky start, they were able to surmount a comeback while some of the Rams’ starters were on the bench, cutting a 28 points lead to 19 points at the conclusion of the first half. Maritime shot just 27.6 percent from the field in the first half, which did not compare up to the 53.1 percent that Farmingdale had finished the half shooting.
Maritime opened up the second half with an 8-2 run, bringing them to within 14 points, but their rally would be cut short and Farmingdale was able to stay on top in this one despite being held to only 26 points in the second half.
Senior center
Robert Benton (Montgomery, Ala./G.W. Carver) (Montgomery, AL/GW Carver) was the only other Privateer to score in double-digits, he finished with only 11 points after scoring 33 in his last game against Mount Saint Mary.
Barbes not only led the team with 20 points, but also matched a game high of 11 rebounds and had a game high four steals.
Freshman guard Daimien Santana (Brooklyn, NY/Grady) scored 21 points off the bench for the Rams, while standout guard Kenny McMillan (Bronx, NY/All Hallows) finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Also contributing to the Rams’ victory was senior guard MD Mazique (Bronx, NY/Taft) who added 16 points, shooting 4-of-5 from downtown.
Today’s loss drops Maritime to 3-13 on the year, 0-7 in the Skyline and extends their losing streak to four games. Farmingdale improves to 11-4 on the year and 7-1 keeping them in a tie for first place in the Skyline. Next up, the Privateers will travel to the Riverdale section of the Bronx on Friday, January 27th, where they will take on the Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent in the two school’s first meeting of 2006. Game time is set for 7:00pm from Hayes Gymnasium in Riverdale, NY.
