Soccer edges out Beavers, 1-0

Throggs Neck, NY – Freshman midfielder Emilio Andino (Roselle, NJ/Abraham Clark) (Roselle, NJ/Abraham Clark) headed a shot into the net off a direct kick from freshman Mayer Nelson (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) to give the Privateers a 1-0 lead and eventual win over the Beavers of the City College of New York Monday afternoon in a non-conference Men’s Soccer match-up.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Kavanaugh (Penfield, NY/Penfield)’s (Penfield, NY/Penfield) recorded his first career shutout and improves his own record to 3-1 on the year. Kavanugh finished the game with 10 saves while junior goalkeeper Neil Khalid Salim (Queen, NY/Pelham Memoria) had seven saves and one goal against for the Beavers. It was a tough defensive battle, with both teams getting some solid chances at the net. The Beavers actually out shot the Privateers 23 to 11, but the Privateers got the one that counted.

 
Today’s victory now brings the Privateers back to .500 on the year at 3-3 and they are currently 1-2 in the Skyline tied for seventh in the conference. It’s a busy week for Maritime as they travel to Brooklyn on Wednesday to take on another CUNYAC team in Medgar Evers, and then return home on Saturday for an important Skyline game against Mount Saint Vincent.
