Throggs Neck, NY – Sophomore forward Can Karabay (Izmir, Turkey/Avni Akol Lisesi) put a shot in the back of the net after some fancy footwork to give the Privateers a 2-1 lead and eventual victory against the Panthers of Old Westbury Saturday afternoon in a men’s soccer Skyline Conference match-up.

The Privateers were the first to get on the board when sophomore midfielder Quentin Peabody (Chatham, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) (Chatham, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) kicked a shot over the Panther goalkeeper’s head after he had blocked a penalty kick attempt by sophomore Mazman Nihat (Iskenderun, Turkey/Ziyakalkavan). Peabody’s goal came only 1:31 into the first half, and would be the only goal scored in the first half.

As the second half opened, history almost repeated itself as the Panthers were awarded a penalty kick just a little under two minutes into the half. The kick was taken by junior defenseman Alex Renwart (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) who put the ball into the top shelf just out of the reach of sophomore goalkeeper Matt Kavanaugh (Penfield, NY/Penfield)’s (Penfield, NY/Penfield) hands. However, Kavanaugh would get his revenge, with the Privateers holding onto a 2-1 lead, Renwart would have a chance to tie up the game on a second penalty kick with only two minutes left to go. Renwart attempted go to the bottom right corner, but Kavanaugh leaped to make the save and crushing the Panthers chance at forcing overtime.

This was quite possibly Kavanaugh’s best game of his collegiate career, making some incredible saves as he helped the Privateers cling to their one goal lead. He finished the day with 16 saves after having faced 26 shots.  With two games in the books, Kavanaugh has allowed only two goals and has 36 saves on the year. Sophomore goalkeeper Brian Hicks (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream) had nine saves for the Panthers.

The win improves Maritime to 2-0 on the year and 1-0 in the Skyline as they look to move toward the program’s best start in years. The Privateers will be back in action on Monday against the Bearcats of Baruch College at the Metropolitan Oval in Flushing, NY. That game will begin at 7pm.
