Throggs Neck, NY – The Privateer Football team opened up its club season on Saturday September 10th against the Seahawks of Salve Regina University. Over 200 Maritime faithful were on hand as the Privateers played an outstanding day of football. They battled it out with the Seahawks, and although the final score was not in favor of Maritime, the Privateers played a hard four quarters, gave it all they had and lived up to the Maritime tradition of acting like gentlemen on and off the field.

Sophomore running back Donald Toby (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside), scored the Privateers first touchdown of the year off of a 13 yard pass bringing them to within one touchdown, 14-7 with six minutes left in the third quarter. However this would be the Privateers only touchdown on the day as the tough Seahawk defense prevented them from adding any more points on the board.

Starting quarterback Zach Townsend (Corning, NY/Corning East) (Corning East, NY/Corning East) took full advantage of the triple option as he ran for 69 yards on 20 carries. Townsend also had 36 yards passing including the 13 yard touchdown pass to Toby.

Freshman punter/defensive back Dan McManus (Tavares, FL/Tavares) (Tavares, FL/Tavares) averaged 23.8 yards per punt, on eight attempts. Starting linebackers AJ Gillian (Alamonte Spring, FL/Lyman) and David Minter (Pensacola, FL/Pine Forest) (Pensacola, FL/Pine Forest) along with defensive lineman Paul Nolan (Rockaway Park, NY/Poly Prep) (Rockaway Park, NY/Poly Prep) led the team with eight tackles each.

The Privateer Football squad will return to action on Saturday September 24th when they host Walter Reed for a 2:30pm kickoff. Prior to their next game, they will help kickoff the Homecoming festivities with a Blue & White Inter-Squad Scrimmage at 10am.
