Throggs Neck, NY – Junior center Alissa Bello (Rockaway, NY/Poly Prep) (Rockaway, NY/Poly Prep) scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a 65-38 defeat to the Bridges of Brooklyn College Thursday in Maritime’s first game of the new year. The Privateers scored a season high of 38 points, with their previous best standing at 36 in a loss to Yeshiva.

This was the best outing so far this season by the Privateers who were limited to only seven players active for the game. In 39 minutes of play, senior guard Kerri Herrmann (Central Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) (Central Islip, NY/St. Anthony’s) scored six points and pulled down 10 rebounds, she also had four steals. Sophomore guard Kristen Johnston (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa Acad.) (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) played the entire game, scoring seven points. Freshman forward Marissa Webber-Bey (Far Rockaway, NY/Fashion) continued to dominate the boards with 10 rebounds and netted her first field goal of the season.

Brooklyn College was led by freshmen guards Jenny Varughese (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island) who finished with 17 points and Jaclyn Cavalcante (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) added 15 points and eight rebounds. Brooklyn scored 41 points off of turnovers as they took advantage of every mistake by the Privateers. The Bridges were given several second chances with 30 offensive rebounds that resulted in 12 points.

Brooklyn held the lead for the entire outing, however the Privateers managed to keep the game close for a majority of the second half until fatigue finally began to set in as they only had two subs available for the game. The victory now gives Brooklyn its sixth win of the year, while the Privateers are still in the hunt for their first victory of the season.

Next up for Maritime will be the Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday January 8th at 2pm.
