Box Score
Throggs Neck, NY – Freshman guard Kenneth Kelly (Belle Harbor, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) (Belle Harbor, NY/Archbishop Molloy) broke out on Wednesday evening scoring 17 points, shooting 5-of-8 from downtown, but his efforts would not be enough to get the Privateers of Maritime College a key win against the Panthers of Old Westbury in a men’s basketball Skyline Conference game Wednesday night in Throggs Neck.

The Privateers trailed early in this one, falling behind by six at the half and were down by as much as 15 points during the game. However, they battled back behind the play of Kelly and their strong defensive efforts, allowing Maritime to tie the game up at 38-38 with 13:07 left in the game.

Westbury would make a run towards the end of the game, building up a 10 point lead with just under three minutes to go.  After that run, the closest the Privateers were able to get to was six points, which remained the spread at the game’s conclusion.

Kelly led all scorers with 17 points, while Westbury guard Ramel Phillips (Central Islip, NY/Central Islip) was right behind him with 16 points. Philips was the top contributor for the Panthers adding six rebounds to compliment his point total.

Senior guard Gerard Danzy (Monroeville, Ala./Hillcrest) (Monroeville, AL/Hillcrest) was second on the team with 12 points while senior center Robert Benton (Montgomery, Ala./G.W. Carver) (Montgomery, AL/GW Carver) added 10 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Michael Garrett (Brooklyn, NY/William E. Grady) scored 13 points and had five boards while junior center Nate Marner (Roosevelt, NY/St. Mary’s) added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Panthers.

Today’s win improves Old Westbury to 5-2 on the year and are now 2-1 in the Skyline Conference, while Maritime drops to 2-5 and 0-2 in the Skyline. There will not be much of a holiday break for the Privateers, as they now must prepare for another big Skyline Conference game which will take place on Wednesday December 28th. On the 28th, the Privateers will head up the Cross Bronx Expressway to take on the Maccabees of Yeshiva University, the Mac’s are currently 4-2 in the Skyline and have a record of 6-6 on the year.
