Juergens has best time in win over NJIT

Throggs Neck, NY – Junior Al Juergens (Boylston, MA/New Fairfield) (Boylston, MA/New Fairfield) had a career best time [11:39.95] in one of the most grueling events, the 1000-yard freestyle, as the Privateers pull out a big 110-91 victory against the New Jersey Institute of Technology Tuesday evening at Maritime.
 
Heading into the final event, the 200-yard freestyle relay, Maritime was holding onto a 95-89 lead. With 11 points on the line for the relay team that finishes first, the Privateer sealed the win as they scored both first [135.02] and second [138.41] place finishes for a total of 15 points and giving them the win.
 
Juergens’ also picked up a first place finish in the 500-yard freestyle [5:35.85] while three other Privateer swimmers had first place finishes. Junior Joseph Stredny (Harveys Lake, PA/Dallas) (Harveys Lake, PA/Dallas) excelled in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.44, junior Drew Gossoo (Marlborough, CT/Xavier) (Marlborough, CT/Xavier) placed first in the 200-yard freestyle for the first time this season, and senior Joseph McHattie (Dania Beach, FL/South Broward) (Dania Beach, FL/South Broward) took first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.69.
 
On the women’s side, sophomore Brittany McVea (Camillus, NY/West Genesse) (Camillus, NY/West Genesse) had a first place finish in the 500-yard freestyle and freshman Dianne Kruse (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St. Anthony's) took first in the 100-yard freestyle just edging out the NJIT swimmer at the finish line.
 
The Maritime College men’s swimming teams improves their season record to 1-3 and the women’s team now stands at 1-4 on the year. Next up, the Privateers will host Lehman College on December 8th in a 6pm meet.
