Benton & Townsend excel in loss to D-I's Army, 53-36

West Point, NY – Senior center Robert Benton (Montgomery, Ala./G.W. Carver) (Montgomery, AL/GW Carver) scored 18 points and shot a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line, but in the end the Privateers were unable to pull out the upset against the Division I Army Black Knights on Saturday, December 17th at Christl Arena in West Point, NY.
 
After one half of play, the Privateers scored a season low of 18 points, but also they kept Army to a season low of 19 points. The Privateers aggressive defensive play baffled the Black Knights, resulting in 11 turnovers. The defensive unit was led by junior forward Dana Townsend (Queens, NY/Benjamin N. Cardozo) who supplied five rebounds and five blocks, eliminating the height advantage that the Black Knights have over the Privateers. Townsend would finish the day with five blocks and 10 rebounds, all coming on the defensive end.
 
Benton led all scorers with six points after one half, while the Black Knights had two with four points.
 
The Black Knights came out strong in the second half, taking an early lead behind the on-point shooting of junior guard Matt Bell (Kokomo, IN/Kokomo) who finished the half with 20 points. Bell was the game’s high scorer with 24 points.
 
The game bumps Maritime down to 2-4 on the year, while the Black Knights improve to 4-5.
 
The Privateers return home on Wednesday, December 21st when they host the Panthers of Old Westbury for a key Skyline Conference match-up. The Panthers are coming into the game with a three game win streak and a record of 4-2, 1-1 in the Skyline Conference.
