Privateer Swimming shock Lightning, 135-74

Throggs Neck, NY – The Maritime College women’s swimming team stole the show as they defeated the Lightning of Lehman College 135-74 while the men’s team came up short dropping a 111-103 decision on Thursday December 8th at Maritime College.
 
The women’s team took first place in 11 out of 13 events which included two relay events and two diving events. Sophomore Alyson Paz (Point Lookout, NY/Long Beach) (Point Lookout, NY/Long Beach) once again finished first in the 1meter diving competition with a final score of 170.63. Paz also had a first place finish in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:59.91 and grabbed second place in her first 3 meter diving competition of the year with a score of 117.23.
 
In her first season with the Privateers, junior Vanessa Anderson (Narragansett, R.I./The Proot School) (Narragansett, RI/The Proot School) has shown improvement as the season has progressed. Against Lehman, Anderson placed first in the 200-yard freestyle [2:51.83] and the 100-yard freestyle [1:15.52].
 
Sophomore Brittany McVea (Camillus, NY/West Genesse) (Camillus, NY/West Genesse) placed first in the 500-yard freestyle [7:07.78] for the second straight meet while freshman Dianne Kruse (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St. Anthony's) came in first in the 50-yard freestyle [35.17], junior Lindsay Price (Conifer, CO/Conifer) (Conifer, CO/Conifer) placed first in the 100-yard backstroke [1:22.20] and senior Cheryl Driscoll (Los Alamos, NM/Los Alamos) (Los Alamos, NM/Los Alamos) took first in the 100-yard breaststroke [125.93].
 
On the men’s side, after trailing early on, the Privateers fought back and came close to stealing the win after grabbing all the points in the last two events. Leading the fight for Maritime were junior Drew Gossoo (Marlborough, CT/Xavier) (Marlborough, CT/Xavier) who placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:25.93, freshman Matthew Drollinger (Glen Cove, NY/Kellenberg) (Glen Cove, NY/Kellenberg) came in first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:00.85, and freshman Karl Fisher (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) (Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township) who finished first in the 100-yard freestyle [51.31].
 
After their victory over Lehman, the women’s swimming team now improves to 2-4 on the year while the men’s team fall to 1-5 overall.
 
Both swimming teams will now have an extended break as the fall semester comes to a close. They return to action on Tuesday January 17th when they head to Staten Island, NY to take on the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island.
