Staten Island, NY – The Maritime College Football team closed out their season this past weekend when they faced off against Wagner College’s JV team in Staten Island, NY. It was a tough match-up for the Privateers against a division 1-AA football program.
Sophomore quarterback
Zack Townsend (Corning, NY/Corning East) scored Maritime’s only touchdown on the day after driving 91 yards up the field in just six plays Townsend ran the ball in from 13-yards out to earn the score. Leading the Privateers on the ground was freshman running back
Douglas Cion (North Massapequa, NY/St. Anthony's) (North Massapequa, NY/St. Anthony’s) with 40 yards rushing.
Defensively, the Privateers played tough for all four quarters, doing what they could to stop the prolific Wagner offense. Leading the way on defense were senior linebacker
Byron Williams (Mt. Vernon, N.Y./Mt. Vernon) (Mt. Vernon, NY/Mt. Vernon) with 6.5 tackles and freshman linebacker
AJ Gillian (Almonte Springs, FL/Lyman) who picked up 6.0 tackles. Also contributing were freshman
Dawitt Goodall (Massapequa, NY/Amityville) who finished the day with 5.0 tackles and freshman defensive back
Jamal Joseph (Elmsford, NY/Stepinac) (Elmsford, NY/Stepinac) who caught the only pick thrown by the Seahawks.
Next season the Privateers will step onto the field for their first season as an NCAA varsity program. This will be just another step in the right direction for a young program that will be looking to build upon the foundation that was made this season.
